Sierra Rose – Norman Music Festival
Singer-songwriter and folk artist, Sierra Rose, who will be performing a free show at the Norman Music Festival, speaks with me in this performer question and answer session. Sierra Rose will perform indoors at Michelangelo’s on Friday, April 24 at 9:00 PM. Since this is the eighth year for the festival, here are eight questions to get to know the performers.
1. For those unfamiliar, how would you describe yourself and your music?
I am a singer-songwriter and folk artist. I like to think that my music is a healthy mix between Sara Bareilles, Taylor Swift, and The Civil Wars.
2. What song would like a person who hasn’t heard your music listen to first?
The song I am most proud of right now is “I’ve Built These Walls.” I think it is probably one of the better songs I have written lately. It means a lot to me, and so sharing it with others is a really special experience.
I have a video and of this song with a little bit more about why I wrote it on my website.
3. What’s your song writing process?
[pullquote-right]”Often times, I will just sit down with my guitar (or whatever instrument I’m playing at the time) and strum until I find a melody.”[/pullquote-right]My writing process varies. I have been doing The 52 Project for songwriting this year, and it has really stretched my writing. Often times, I will just sit down with my guitar (or whatever instrument I’m playing at the time) and strum until I find a melody. Usually the melody and lyrics come to me at the same time. Other times, when the song doesn’t come as easily, I will spend 10-15 minutes and just free write. No boundaries or editing. Just putting pen to paper and writing. Usually, that helps break up any writer’s block I may be having.
I have also written a blog post about my songwriting process that is a little bit more in depth.
4. What are your thoughts on the Norman Music Festival?
I love the Norman Music Festival! This is my second year to be able to be a part of it, and I am so honored and excited to have the opportunity. Oklahoma has such a rich artistic culture that constantly surprises me (even though I have lived here my whole life). I love being a part of that culture!
5. In general, what inspires you?
I am inspired by everything around me! I take inspiration from my own personal experiences, from movies/shows, from others’ experiences…from anything and everything. I am a very emotional person, and I am deeply affected by the things around me.
6. You’ve just been offered an all expenses paid trip. Where would you go?
My heart has been set on going to Ireland for awhile now. I would go there in a heartbeat given the opportunity!
7. Any plans while you’re in the area?
Well, I am always in the area! I play in Norman quite a bit. So, check my Facebook page for event updates!
8. Anything else you want the public to know about you?
I have a blog that I update on my website every week. I write about my experiences as a musician, about my journey into and through this industry, and everything in-between. It is a really great way to hear new music I’m writing, and to get to know me better. So, if you are interested, that is the best place to go!
Thank you to everyone who has supported me and continues to support me! It means more than you could ever know!
