A Blackwatch Christmas
‘Tis the season for Christmas Music! Recorded at Blackwatch Studios in Norman, “A Blackwatch Christmas, Volume 5” features 9 original songs performed by Oklahoma artists including: Barcelona, Bronze Radio Return, Sherree Chamberlain, Jacob Tovar, Samantha Crain, Sports, Broncho, Hector Comancho and Horse Thief.
“A Blackwatch Christmas” is the fifth Christmas album produced by Fowler Volkswagen of Norman in partnership with Norman-based Blackwatch Studios, as part of a long-term goal to make Oklahoma the independent Christmas music capitol of the world.
Last year, I did an interview with them about their album, The Naughty List. For this year’s Tuesday Treat interview, Director of Community Outreach, Kristen Vails, answers my questions about the album.
Let’s start with the back story. What’s your role with the Fowler VW Christmas albums and how did the project come to be?
Before I worked with Fowler, I was an avid collector of the album. We have all 6 Fowler VW Christmas albums! This tradition was started simply to spotlight our amazing local music community, and to provide a really unique gift for our friends, old and new. We also want to establish Oklahoma as the “Indie Christmas Music Capitol of the World!” I’m excited to be a small part of that this year.
This year’s title is “A Blackwatch Christmas.” How did you decide on this name?
Blackwatch Studios in Norman is the producer of the album. They handle the technical and creative production, and the entire album reflects their talent.
Use seven words to describe each song on the album.
1 “Whatever You Want” SPORTS
Drive. Ryan Gosling drives away from a Christmas party robbery to this song.
2 “Fire” BARCELONA
Romance. For the “All I Want for Christmas is You” weary, this Christmas romance ballad is for you.
3 “you think that i know what you would do to my” BRONCHO
Pow. Pow pow pow pow pow pow
4 “Christmas Time” SHERREE CHAMBERLAIN
Icy. A new sound for Sherree, her voice echoes in an icy chill fitting for the season.
5 “Mele Kalikimaka” HORSE THIEF
Sway. Horse Thief keeps the Hawaiian sway, but makes this classic at home in Oklahoma.
6 “Swingin’ Christmas” JACOB TOVAR
Classic. Jacob Tovar gives us a new classic that everyone will love to play at holiday festivities.
7 “Throwback Holiday” BRONZE RADIO RETURN
Memory. In keeping with the title, Bronze Radio Returns brings our childhood Christmas memories back to light.
8 “BloodNog” SAMANTHA CRAIN FEAT BRINE WEBB
Campy. A campy murder ballad to Crain’s “Breaking the Ice” on the first volume.
9 “You Gotta Get Down Fothablow” HECTOR COMANCHO
Baaaaaaad. Christmas 1985 battles 2015. Who will win?
What was the greatest challenge in putting this album together?
Pressing vinyl can be a challenge. There are an extremely limited amount of companies who do the work, so getting the album out into the community around Christmas is always a challenge.
How’s the long-term goal of making Oklahoma the independent Christmas music capitol of the world coming along this year?
[pullquote-right]”All together Fowler VW has helped to bring 61 indie Christmas music songs to the world.”[/pullquote-right]All together Fowler VW has helped to bring 61 indie Christmas music songs to the world, so I think we are making a good run for it.
What Winter Fun will you partake in this season in Oklahoma?
