The So Help Me’s – Norman Music Festival
Featured in Uncovering Oklahoma’s District Up! trailer and the Norman Music Festival 9 video, The So Help Me’s, who will be performing a free show at the Norman Music Festival, speaks with me in this performer question and answer session. They will perform at the Brewhouse on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 6:00pm. Since this is the ninth year for the festival, here are nine questions to get to know them.
1. To get people to know you, how would you describe yourself and your music?
We would describe ourselves as existentially rooted Indie rock. Our lyrics are influenced by existential philosophy filtered through our own personal experiences living in Oklahoma.
2. What song would you like a person who hasn’t heard your music listen to first?
Apollo, the third song on our Relativity EP, is definitely one of our personal favorites. It encapsulates our tone and aesthetic as a band.
3. What’s your song writing process?
Normally one of us comes up with a solid idea for a song and we’ll work on it with a few members until we decide it’s developed enough to introduce to the full band. The full band then tweaks the song until it becomes the full picture.
4. What are your thoughts on the Norman Music Festival?
[pullquote-right]”When we applied to NMF we got into a huge argument amongst the band about whether or not NMF even really existed, along with all of reality.”[/pullquote-right]We’re pretty excited to play NMF this year. When we applied to NMF we got into a huge argument amongst the band about whether or not NMF even really existed, along with all of reality. Our conclusion was that it doesn’t really matter whether or not reality existed. We’re still going to play NMF and have fun.
5. In general, what inspires you?
We are inspired by anything artistic that catches our interest. A big thing for us is Jazz. We all studied jazz before forming the band. Philosophy, and current events are other obvious influences. Our biggest influence is Oklahoma itself, the land where we grew up, and the people and places that make us who we are.
7. Any plans while you’re in the Norman area?
We are definitely going to check out the other bands perform during the festival!
8. Anything else you want the public to know about you?
We are trashcan people. Also, we have an EP out on iTunes and Spotify and if you want to know about any upcoming shows, you can check out our website, www.thesohelpmes.com
9. What do you think should be the Ninth Wonder of the World?
