Reflecting on Uncovering Oklahoma in 2016
With 2016 over, I want to take a moment to reflect on the stories and adventures I had with Uncovering Oklahoma. Back in April, I shifted to doing Uncovering Oklahoma full time and because of that move, I produced more videos in 2016 than all previous years combined! I traveled over 5,000 miles across the state for this publication and I’ve had an amazing time. I love introducing people to new places and things. My favorite accomplishment this year, hands down, was my feature-length documentary, District Up. I spent over a year making it. I grew in ways that have elevated my skills and defined my style as a filmmaker.
Now, to take a look back at the most popular stories.
No surprises here. The various date and holiday guides are always a big draw.
The Top 5 Most Viewed Uncovering Oklahoma Videos
5. Half a Day with the Halfrican American
I spent half a day with comedian, Brett James, a.k.a. the Halfrican American as he celebrates his retirement from the Air Force and as he transitions into a full-time comedian. Due to the popularity of this story, I plan to do more like this in the future.
4. Heard on Hurd and iFly
Jill Castilla talks about Heard on Hurd, a monthly food truck, music, and shopping festival in Downtown Edmond. Joining Jill to talk about the event is Stephen Viljoen and Pam Lafollette and Farah Walker.
Then Evan Comer describes the sensation of indoor skydiving at iFly in Oklahoma City, which everyone can do!
3. The Happily Entitled – Friction [Music Video]
For the first time, I made a proper music video, Friction, with the band The Happily Entitled. I had a blast making it. I would like to do more in 2017.
2. Uncovering Oklahoma visits The Escape OKC
I love it when I go weird creative weird route for a video. Creative Director, Jonathan Cox, and Head Fabricator, James Gibbons, explain what is the Escape and how it works. Staff members, Jordan Davis and Samm Miller, also share helpful advice.
1. Guthrie Haunts Scaregrounds
The most watched video was from when I traveled to Guthrie to visit the Guthrie Haunts Scaregrounds. Owner John Pagonis talks about the haunted house, what visitors can expect, their terror upgrade perk, and more.

Plans for 2017
New videos will continue with Uncovering Oklahoma. I am working on stepping up my game. I’ve been meeting with friends and professional colleagues to discuss plans for 2017. I have ideas for some new shows too. For one them, I think it would be neat to have a studio audience because there’s nothing like that in Oklahoma. I’m still meeting people, discussing ideas and projects. When I more to tell, I’ll share.
That’s a wrap for this reflection. I’m currently working on an article about things to look forward to in 2017.
