Flock of Pigs – Norman Music Festival
Combining hip-hop, jazz, funk, and rock to create a unique sound, Flock of Pigs, speaks with me in this Norman Music Festival performer question and answer session. Flock of Pigs will perform at the Budweiser Depot Stage on Friday, April 27, 2018, at 9:00 pm. Here are ten questions to get to know them.
1. To get people to know you, how would you describe yourself and your music?
We have been described by our fans as “Rage Against the Machine meets Prince”. -Joe Lee, vocals/violist
2. What song would you like a person who hasn’t heard your music listen to first?
“Good Morning” our latest single. It features Kristen Marie, an incredibly talented vocalist from Oklahoma City who was featured on season 10 of NBC’s The Voice. It is also a good introduction to who Flock of PIgs is, and what we want to convey through our music. – Wyatt Helms, keys/clarinet
3. What’s your song writing process?
Typically, I come up with several riffs that have influences from several different genres – the weirder the better. I then try to piece together the riffs with transitions that develop an overall movement and direction for the instrumental composition. The idea is presented as a “skeleton” to the band and we then discuss how to make the song feature everyone’s individual abilities and skills. Then, every instrumentalist works in a one-on-one setting giving their flavor and influence in the direction of the song – adding their own riffs and solos. During this whole process, Joe cooks up some spicy, meaty stew of rhymes and vocals that gets the crowd coming back for more. – Ben Renfrow, guitarist/arranger
4. What are your thoughts on the Norman Music Festival?
We love Norman Music Festival. It’s surreal because all of us went to NMF way before Flock of Pigs was formed, and now we’re playing on a main stage Friday night. It is very humbling. – Wyatt Helms, keys/clarinet
5. In general, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the impact I have as a musician and vocalist. The idea that I can connect with people from around the world through music motivates me to passionately continue doing what I love. -Joe Lee, vocalist
6. You’ve just been offered an all expenses paid trip. Where would you go?
Pyongyang, we would want to share our art as an inspiration to the people of North Korea. – Nick Lovatto, drums
7. Any plans while you’re in the Norman area?
We hope to keep expanding our fan base while by way of new tunes and exciting live performances! -Wyatt Helms, keys/clarinet
8. What else you want the public to know about you?
We are fully committed to creating sounds that inspire the future generation as well as performances that thoroughly entertain. -Joe Lee, vocals/violist
9. What do you think should be the Eleventh Wonder of the World?
Easy, Flock of Pigs. – Flock of Pigs
10. What was the most extreme adventure you’ve had?
We retreated to the mountains of northern New Mexico to get away from the day to day responsibilities of life and to get better in touch with our musical mission. It was quite a trip. – Riley Richardson, Trombone
