Welcome to the Monday Music Discovery playlist, where I feature a mixtape of both new music video videos and singles of all genres of music by local bands in Oklahoma. In this Monday Music Discovery, there’s new music by doubleVee, Nick Midnight, Giakob Lee, Roots of Thought, Samuel Regan, ZUNIS, and Calvin McGriff. Ladder for the People by doubleVee

Artist Statement: The video was filmed in the lovely mid-century modern home of April, Mike and Lucas Mays in Oklahoma City, with the skillful Dave Smith of Festival City Films handling the bulk of the camerawork. It’s for a song from our upcoming EP “Songs for Birds and Bats.” While the song is open to interpretation, it’s about a man who lives his life like a king until he realizes he’s his own worst enemy. The king is played by renowned architect Mike Mays.

The EP released on April 12th via digital outlets, with limited edition CDs available via doubleVee.net. Buy via Apple Music, Amazon, and Bandcamp for digital music and doubleVee.net for CDs.

Piece of You by Nick Midnight

Artist Statement: I wrote the song “Piece of You” about how it feels when you first meet someone and are completely head over heels for them. I wanted to capture that feeling.

Too Often by Giakob Lee

Artist Statement: My name is Giakob Lee and I am a singer-songwriter based out of Cushing, OK. Too Often is the title track to my LP that will be released late summer in 2019. This song was written in response to the struggles of going through my divorce. This live performance video was recorded by Mental Media. Thanks so much for the opportunity to share my music. Take care.

Powdered Donut by Roots of Thought

Artist Statement: Powdered Donut is our latest single, released in 2018, recorded at Closet Studios with Kendal Osborn (Bixby, OK) and mastered at Buffalo Hide Mastering (Tulsa, OK). This song hints to the new direction our music is taking, since our “Familiar Feelings” EP. We’ve added a synth/keys player who joined us for tour, and is now happily part of our family, so naturally, his presence has influenced our sound. Powdered Donut is haunting, a story of losing someone you’re in love with to attention, and the substances of the night.

Judy by Samuel Regan

Artist Statement: I made it a couple of days after the untimely passing Judy, the most special cat I’ve ever met. It is dedicated to her and all of the people she brought together.

Power Be by ZUNIS

Artist Statement: Official Music Video for “Power Be” off of our Earth To Self EP.
Directed by: Matt Aloisio w/ High-Res Films

Power Be is a song about the many forces at work against our own well being. The universal forces at work for and against us. An inescapable battle with yourself that everyone endures and remedies to each his own. With power be we offer our method of solace, the light of the sun.

Old Fashioned Love by Calvin McGriff

Artist Statement: “Old Fashioned Love” is about honoring love. It seems that not too many mainstream songs nowadays touch on the the topic of loving and respecting your partner. There was a feeling of needing to make a song that talks about love and encouraging people to not give up on it.
