In your own words, what is the We Women about?
We Women is a podcast focused on educating, encouraging, and empowering women, specifically the women and folx of Oklahoma. We focus on a specific theme every month and interview women or LGBTQ+ folx about their involvement relating to the theme, the fourth episode of the month we feature a Feminist of the Month also relating to theme to highlight those doing the work whether that was in the past or the present.
Who is the podcast intended for?
Anyone who needs it but specifically women, young girls, and LGBTQ+ youth in Oklahoma (but we do cuss, kinda a lot).
Why did you want start the podcast?
With everything going on in the country and our state it is easy to feel like there’s no good around you and we knew that wasn’t true. We wanted to create a space for women and LGBTQ+ folx to tell us about all the good work they are doing in our state and communities and to create our own community and connect us to each other. We also just have a lot to say all the time haha.
What’s a good episode for first time listeners to check out?
The first episode is a great introduction to us (Ruby & Stevie), our relationship, and why we started this adventure together. But we also really love Episode 12 with Councilwoman Nikki Nice, Episode 24 Planned Parenthood Great Plains, & Episode 28 Stevie & Ruby see Ilana Glazer, to name a few. But there’s really an episode for everybody because we change our theme every month. July we’re highlighting local musicians!
What have been some challenges and lessons learned in the the production of your podcast?
We have definitely learned how to roll with the punches, things don’t always work out as planned but we have to trust each other that we will get it done. It has added a whole other dynamic to our relationship now that we’re no longer just best friends but creative business partners too. As long as we believe in the work we’re doing we know things will work out.
Any behind-the-scenes stories you wish to share?
Ohhhhh mannnnn, we record in our pajamas half the time, we have technical difficulties at least every other episode, we’ve had guests partners sit in and their kids too, and more often than not we’re drinking wine with our guests.. like we said roll with the punches.
We just want to remind folx that there are people fighting for them and the things they believe in and to empower them to do the same.
What do you hope people will take away after listening to your podcast?
A sense of hope for our future and a sense community and belonging. We just want to remind folx that there are people fighting for them and the things they believe in and to empower them to do the same.
Anything else you want to say or let people know?
We’re just so thankful for the love and support we’ve been shown since starting this a little over half a year ago. Everyone has a story to share if you give them the time and platform to do so, we’re thankful to be that for so many amazing
