ROCK PAPER SCISSORS: Based on a True Story Denise Duong and Matt Seikel
OKLAHOMA CITY – Science Museum Oklahoma’s Satellite Galleries is excited to announce their first show of 2012, “Rock Paper Scissors: based on a True Story;” opening Friday, January 20, 2012 at 7:00PM. This show features the art of Denise Duong and Matt Seikel. The evening reception is free and open to the public. The show will run until June 6th, 2012.

“”Rock Paper Scissors” truly demonstrates the marriage of science and art as a vital paradigm” said Trevor Taylor, Visual Arts Aficionado. “Science Museum Oklahoma is passionate about helping people experience art in original and meaningful ways. As a science museum, we are equipped with unique resources for outreach, exploration and creativity; which translate seamlessly into the gallery.”

“Rock Paper Scissors: Based on a True Story” will feature new mixed media and ink works by Denise Duong as well as Matt Seikel’s ceramics and custom drums. This exhibition will be interactive, allowing all guests the opportunity to engage with the artwork in various forms.

“The “Rock Paper Scissors” exhibition has given Denise and Matt’s artwork a setting which allows their imaginations to really speak for themselves,” said Suzette Ellison, Vice President of Programs and Interpretation. “The exhibition won’t simply be art on a wall or ceramics on a pedestal. This experience should challenge the viewer to interact with the art in creative and unconventional ways.”

Explosive Improv Shows

0

This week’s Improv Saturday update includes videos from three debuting acts. Included are:

The explosive OKC Improv debut of C-4 starring Chris Curtis and Curt Coy of Red Dirt Improv
The fast-paced Whose Line-style short form improv courtesy of the OKC Improv All-Stars
The relationship-driven comedy of The Ones Your Mother Warned You About
The world premiere of female duo Two’s Company starring Jodi Nestander and Raychel Winstead of The MiDolls
The world premiere of the poetically naughty Me Talk Sexy from October 9′s Adults Only show

Along with these new videos, I updated the Improv Troupes page itself with all of the past videos. I also revised the top five most viewed performances and Twinprov’s “String Theory” July 31, 2010 Show shot up to the number one spot, bumping everything else down. I think Nicole Melki has something to do with that surge…

Stay tuned for more comedy videos and our Holiday Festivities Guide.

Improv Saturday for October 23

Okay, let’s get some comedy and improv videos online. Writer and comedian Stan Silliman starts off the Saturday, September 25 night of OKC Improv. See the side of the story of the Villain in Villain The Musical’s October 2 show. The all girl improv troupe, the MiDolls, performs a teacher archetype show at OKC Improv on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at The Boom! I just bounced around the timeline there.

Don’t forget: the Ghouls Gone Wild Halloween Parade is tonight. Have a great night.

Improv Teachers

Since I only got the chance to upload one video this week, I made it a good one. The all girl improv troupe, the MiDolls, performs a teacher archetype show at OKC Improv on Saturday, July 31, 2010 in the Ghostlight Theatre Club. To spare time, the introduction scene where the girls are passing out food to the audience was cut out.

OKC Improv, Oklahoma’s premiere showcase for improv comedy and theater, will begin its 4th run at Ghostlight Theatre Club (3110 N Walker) Saturday, Sept. 18 with weekly shows at 8pm and 10pm continuing through Oct. 9. Tickets are $10 each. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made via E-Mail at okcimprov@gmail.com or by calling (405) 343-1570.

The upcoming run includes returning favorites such as Stillwater long-form troupe Cueless, Oklahoma’s only all-gal group, The MiDolls, stand-up comedian Brad Porter, the state’s longest running troupe Everybody and Their Dog, the nefariously improvised Villain: The Musical, the relationship-driven comedy of The Ones Your Mother Warned You About, and the monopsychotic brilliance of Twinprov.

The current run will also feature six acts that are brand new to the OKC Improv stage. Four of them are new to Oklahoma. Three of them are world premieres!

A brand new improv duo, Two’s Company, made up of Jodi Nestander (The MiDolls) and Raychel Winstead (The MiDolls, Villain: The Musical, and The Ones Your Mother Warned You About) will have its world premiere at 8pm on September 25, followed by the OKC Improv debut of another duo, Red Letters, comprised of husband and wife Bryan and Alyssa Buckley from Tahlequah, OK. Two more OKC Improv debuts will follow at 10pm with writer and stand-up comic Stan Silliman and yet another new duo, C-4, featuring Chris Curtis and Curt Coy of Red Dirt Improv.

On Friday, October 8th OKC Improv will play host to The New Movement Fall Mini-Tour! presented by Austin and Dallas-based Megaphone Comedy.

Twinprov will open the 8pm show on October 9th with the return of their “Hip-Hop Harold,” String Theory, featuring violinist Nicole Melki, followed by the Oklahoma debut of Austin, TX-based ColdTowne Theater, presenting a powerhouse showcase of the best in improv and sketch comedy. One of the premiere performance groups and teaching institutions in the thriving Austin comedy scene, ColdTowne will be teaching a one-time only Sketch Writing Workshop the next day, Sunday, October 10th at 1pm at Ghostlight Theatre Club. The 3-4 hour workshop will cost $20. There will be a limited number of seats. To reserve a spot, call (405) 343-1570 or E-Mail okcimprov@gmail.com.

After a successful experiment over the summer with an adults-only format, OKC Improv will be presenting its second Blue Show on October 9th at 10pm with stand-up comedian Dan Skaggs, the world premiere of Me Talk Sexy starring Raychel Winstead and Buck Vrazel (Twinprov, The Ones Your Mother Warned You About, and Villain: The Musical), followed by the second performance of the already infamously raucous and raunchy comedy of OKC-based trio Stretchin’ It.

OKC Improv will begin a new 8-week session of improv classes for adults starting Saturday, September 18 at Ghostlight Theatre Club (3110 N Walker, OKC). The Level 1 class will be from 2-4pm followed by Level 2 from 4-6pm. Drop-ins are always welcome in the Level 1 class. The first class attended is free. Each additional class is $10. To enroll call (405) 343-1570 or E-Mail okcimprov@gmail.com. For more information go to www.okcimprov.com.

In addition to the ongoing runs at Ghostlight Theater Club, OKC Improv is expanding into other venues to reach out to new audiences and accommodate the growing number of Oklahoma groups, which have tripled in number since OKC Improv’s debut in December, 2009.

OKC Improv can now also be seen monthly at The Boom (2218 NW 39th St, OKC) and will be making its debut at The State Fair of Oklahoma this year with a dozen performances from local groups with evening shows Thursday-Saturday and afternoon shows on Saturday in the Oklahoma Expo Hall.
