FundEd: A School Cafeteria-Themed Dinner
With school budgets still in crisis, community organizations across the city are stepping in to fill the gaps that are left in the wake of budget cuts and reduced resources. In the Classen Ten Penn neighborhood of Oklahoma City, experimental art space Current Studio is partnering with Eugene Field Elementary school to replace the in-school visual arts programming that was lost in 2016. In support of this program, the community is invited to FundED: A School Cafeteria Themed Dinner, with dishes provided by local chefs taking their own spin on traditional school cafeteria fare. Local artists are also contributing postcard-sized artworks, with 100% of art sales benefitting the program. The dinner will be held Monday, July 17, 6-8 pm at Eugene Field Elementary, 1515 N Klein, OKC. Tickets are $35/person or $60/couple.
Current Studio co-founders Kelsey Karper and romy owens are members of the school’s Community Action Board (CAB), which they joined in early 2016 after opening the neighborhood art space. Replacing the recently lost in-school visual art instruction seemed an appropriate way for the new organization to support the school and the students.
After a successful fundraising dinner in 2016, combined with individual donations and grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council and Allied Arts, Current Studio was able to provide art instruction for second through sixth grades in the spring 2017 semester. Through the program, four guest teaching artists each led three-week art classes for each grade. Each class also experienced a field trip to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Students, teachers, and parents responded positively to the art partnership, and with the school still facing budget shortfalls, Current Studio has extended the program into the fall 2017 semester.
The partnership and art instruction would not be possible without community support, and the FundED dinner is critical to gathering that support. Parents, neighbors, and advocates for a well-rounded education are encouraged to attend or make a donation to the program. More information is available by clicking here.
