In this performer question and answer session, I speak with Defining Times, who will be performing a free show at the The Norman Music Festival. Since this is the sixth festival, here are six questions to get to know the performers.
1. For those unfamiliar, how would you describe yourselves and your music?
I would describe us as a band of brothers. It’s inspiring to be in a band with people who you love and trust. The idea is that very feeling, the love and trust, would translate into the music and have an effect on us and the people that hear what we do.
2. What songs do you recommend that best represent you?
From our latest EP “Separate Tongues” I would say that “Driving Into Smoke” best tells the story of who we are.
3. What’s your song writing process?
I feel that we have a very simple approach to making music, four guys in a room bashing out the songs until we stumble onto something that works. I would say that we have a strong sense of melody and tend to deconstruct the songs once we begin build them up. Basically what happens is that someone brings an idea and we try to flush it out as best we can or until that idea runs dry. It typically takes us a few weeks to finalize the structure of the song then we just play them at shows and find what works and what doesn’t. It’s pretty simple.
4. What are your thoughts on the Norman Music Festival?
It’s fantastic, and we are very honored to back for the third time!! We are very proud to have this sort of festival in our backyard, and the general impact that it’s had on the Oklahoma music scene is immeasurable.
5. In general, what inspires you?
I know this is maybe typical or boring, but very simply life with all it’s ups and downs brings us to the songs that we create.
6. Anything else you want the public to know about you?
We are working on the new album as we speak, writing and demoing like crazy. We are very happy to debut a few new songs for our set on Saturday.
