For food with soul, the rustic southern cafe, Urban Roots, is a destination for the Deep Deuce District. Urban Roots is a communal space where food and art intersect with events such as open mic nights, live bands, poetry readings, improv, and more.
Having been there myself several times, it is hard to pick just one favorite dish because they have all been delicious. Let’s start with the Catfish and Grits with their perfect seasoning and presentation. The perfectly cooked greens and catfish, and the super creamy grits make for a perfectly balanced dish. When I visited Urban Roots with a tour group from Foodie Foot Tour, another person described this dish as being full of soul, and I agree completly.
On one of our visits we had the Crab Mac and Cheese as an appetizer. The mild flavor of the crab was an unexpected but excellent complement to this classic dish.
Another main dish worth getting: the Buttermilk Waffles and Chicken. This is the type of chicken you dream about, crispy. juicy and full of flavor, and drizzled with a maple-butter glaze. So good.
OH! The Bread Pudding! I kid you not – It tasted like everything I love about breakfast, sweet and creamy and oh so good.
For a restaurant inspired by culture, comfort, and creativity Urban Roots hits the mark. I recommend trying if you’re near the Deep Deuce District.
