Chicken N Waffles album cover
Fellow Aries, Sherman “WoRm” Johnson, talks about his latest album, Chicken N Waffles, in this Creator Conversation interview session. I ask him about his music, writer’s block, his calibrations, where to get the best chicken and waffles, and more.

How do you describe yourself and your music?
I would describe myself and my music as oldie Goldie. I have an old school mindset which spills over into my music. I like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu. Making my music feel somewhat like the 90’s era of hip-hop. My music is a direct representation of my life, all true everyday life stories but positive and clean.

Use only seven words to describe your album, Chicken N Waffles.
Fun, Real, Relatable, Smooth, Classic, Amazing, and Delicious!

What was the greatest challenge you had when making the album?
Tbh, myself, I got in the way of myself. I was doing too many things when trying to create this album. Like producing and recording different artist. I Started to lose focus.

Did you “get writer’s block even when there’s so much to talk about?”
“Because I know what I want to say but to make it flow and sound good to the music there’s a certain way you have to say things.”Haha, yes! All the time! Because I know what I want to say but to make it flow and sound good to the music there’s a certain way you have to say things. So many of the songs to me sound a little of the same because they all have the inspiration behind them.

Let’s talk about your calibrations for this project, like why them, and what did you learn from each of them?
Starting with Nev Morgan, I’ve always wanted an instrumental from him because he can really play and he does nothing but complete soul, it seemed like a no brainier to me. Me and Nev are just two homies who just love to do music together.

Ashlee Watkins is a singer that I’m Producing. She has an AMAZING voice and is really good at writing. We’re still working on her album so I thought it would be best to introduce her sonically on my album. She does have a single that I should be sending your way in the future. 🙂

The last album that I release did not have my real brother, Taylor Latre, on it so I made sure we had a track together. He’s a better rapper than me and he pushes me to do better.

The same goes for my bruh Marrell Jones. This guy inspired the approach as far as completely honest dark songs for the second half of the album. Having a song titled Ducked Off on a sinister beat like that I just heard him on it.

For Fresh when I heard the track for “Change” I just heard his voice on the track and figured he could handle it. Fresh has been cool with me and vice versa. I really like his writing.

Where can you get the best chicken and waffles in Oklahoma?
The best place you can get Chicken N Waffles is at Bistro 46.

Give me a super dope quote.
“I realized life is all about perception, you on outside looking in on my so-called blessing”

What advice do you have for keeping one’s love?
Be patient, be kind and listen. Actually listen so you can learn how to learn them in return.

What else would you like people to know about yourself and your music?
I produce all my music. I like to make jokes but I take my music very seriously, and I’m an Aries. I like old episodes of Sister, Sister and Pimp My Ride. My music is made to help ANYBODY through any situation. It’s for inspiration.
