Rhythm and poetry rapper, Chief Peace, speaks with me in this Norman Music Festival performer question and answer session. Chief Peace will perform at the Bud Light Depot Stage on Friday, April 28, 2017, at 8:00 pm. Since this is the festival’s tenth year, here are ten questions to get to know him.
1. To get people to know you, how would you describe yourself and your music?
Usually when I describe what I do I let people know I’m an artist, a rapper to be exact, but to me, rap stands for rhythm & poetry so that’s how I approached it. I work to make hip-hop music that is not only informing but entertaining as well. I make sure every song is something you can play and have fun too with friends but also take home and listen to at night and actually get something from it.
2. What song would you like a person who hasn’t heard your music listen to first?
I would probably say “Hippy Kid”. It’s a perfect example of the entertaining and informing standard I go for with my music. I think that everyone deep down enjoys being outside, hanging out with friends, listening to music, etc. which to me is what a “Hippy Kid” is so it’s a way to relate to people on a deeper level
3. What’s your song writing process?
Now that I’ve started making my own beats its starting to be more of a start to finish process but it can vary is so many ways. Usually the music sparks a certain emotion or cadence and I just let my creativity fly free. I write and study poetry every day so I’m always ready to write if necessary.
4. What are your thoughts on the Norman Music Festival?
When I graduated high school I first moved into an apartment in Norman and had a make shift studio in my closet. I vividly remember riding my longboard through the NMF crowd in 2013 and thinking about how rad it was that something like this was happened right by me. I remember going to the hip-hop shows there and standing front row at every one of them and it’s funny now because most of the people I went to watch are now my good friends.
5. In general, what inspires you?
Interactions. Whether it’s in my life or I’m just at the mall people watching. I always get an extreme joy/energy watching how people interact with each other. Whether it’s an argument, two lovers looking at each other, or the little kid just trying to figure out why he can’t have more ice cream.
6. You’ve just been offered an all expenses paid trip. Where would you go?
I’d probably look at all of the coolest Instagram or screen savers and choose one and pick my favorite and say there.
7. Any plans while you’re in the Norman area?
Donut King and catching some vibes from the others artists
8. Anything else you want the public to know about you?
The fact that I’m getting an interview from NMF and your reading it only means that my dreams are slowly coming true because I never gave up on them, and you shouldn’t too.
9. What do yo think should be the Ninth Wonder of the World?
The sculpture I’m gonna build when I’m older lol foreal though
10. What was the most extreme adventure you’ve had?
Oh boy.. Let’s just say us hippy kids have plenty of adventures with good ol mother nature. Vegas too but you know the rules about there.. haha
