With enigmatic Hip-Hop sounds, Marrell Jones, speaks with me in this Norman Music Festival performer question and answer session. Marrell Jones will perform at the Main Street Event Center on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at 10:00 pm. Here are ten questions to get to know him.
1. To get people to know you, how would you describe yourself and your music?
In terms of my personality, brand and music I’d describe my whole vibe as being “enigmatic”. I am constantly thinking of unique sounds and concepts to play with when creating music, and I won’t put out anything until I’m comfortable with it and know that it’s bringing something fresh to the table. I think most of my listeners would describe my music as being “dark” or edgy, which at times, it can be. In my personal life I’m pretty happy and positive, so when I create music it allows me to let out some to play with some of the dark tones and ideas we don’t get to see in each other on a day to day basis, it takes on its own life sort of like the comic book anti-hero “Venom.”
2. What song would you like a person who hasn’t heard your music listen to first?
Deep End (feat. Chris Savage)
3. What’s your song writing process?
“I start mumbling out different types of flows until I find one that I would really like to start a song with. It looks kind of stupid at first but there’s definitely a method to the madness.”Once I have the instrumental that I’d like to use. I start mumbling out different types of flows until I find one that I would really like to start a song with. It looks kind of stupid at first but there’s definitely a method to the madness. At that point I really try to find a word that’ll work with the flow, and once I find that word the rest comes fairly easily. If I find myself after starting the writing process I’ll start on another song or do something completely different until I can return to it and finish the song. Sometimes I just have to slowly chip away at a song until it’s complete depending on how I feel about that particular piece.
4. What are your thoughts on the Norman Music Festival?
It truly is an amazing festival for the state of Oklahoma. The fact that that it’s free to the public, and they still make sure that the artists are all taken care of is pretty awesome. The fest makes sure to at least have a diverse amount of genres and stages to appeal to all variety of musical tastes. They’ve done a decent job at trying to bring in new acts every year, so as long as they keep that up there will be very few downsides to this event in my opinion. I encourage everyone to check it out at least once.
5. In general, what inspires you?
This question is difficult for me to answer because I am inspired by lots of things such as my childhood, my idols, my favorite artists, my friends, my trials and tribulations, culture, television and so much more. It’s kind of hard to be general about it. I definitely love 90s Pro Wrestling, and Earl Sweatshirt though…
6. You’ve just been offered an all expenses paid trip. Where would you go?
I recently got back from studying abroad in Europe in which I got to go to places I’ve always wanted to go such as France and Italy. So my next goal is probably a Central American country but I’m not sure which one.
7. Any plans while you’re in the Norman area?
I’ll definitely have to hit up Brewhouse and check out some craft beer and hopefully discover a new artist or band while I’m at it. I’ll also be checking out Worm’s performance on Friday night!
8. What else you want the public to know about you?
I am releasing my first project in two years this Summer. In the meantime here’s my website: MarrellJones.com
9. What do you think should be the Eleventh Wonder of the World?
Lake Bled, Slovenia……if you’ve never heard of it…do your research and get back to me.
10. What was the most extreme adventure you’ve had?
While my girlfriend and I were abroad we decided to take a week-long trip that included going to Dublin, Ireland; Paris, France; Brussels, Belgium; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Prague, Czech Republic…..it definitely felt like the Amazing Race.
