Artist Statement: The safety of humanity is at risk. Society is crumbling. The end is coming. What do you do?
These were the thoughts in my head when I was writing these songs. I, personally, don’t handle big issues well so I either shut down parts of myself & become apathetic or I focus on something or someone to distract myself. I wanted to bring those feelings of anxiety/apathy to the verses. The character is grasping for normalcy & that carefree feeling she grew up with but she can’t seem to reach it because, ha, the end is coming. I wanted to speak those words before the choruses as a way to admit to herself the reality of her situation.
The chorus was actually written first though, it’s the chaos of the story, the running, screaming, giving up & taking what you can before it all burns. I wrote a poem with the line “old world, new world / crumble all the same” the day the track was sent to me & that line really stuck in my head & shaped the story. The bridge, to me, is that part in a movie where life slows down & the character gets one final moment of clarity before they face their doom… which leads us to “The End”. With this song, I wanted to wrap up the story, or at least show a side of the apocalypse that we don’t normally see. I thought, “what if these characters woke up to the stillness? Or found their own paradise & started humanity over with the reflections & lessons from a society that failed itself & it’s home? What would that be like? What would we miss or not miss?”
Clearly, the end of humanity is very interesting to me. I had fun getting in my head & imagining my cartoon self vs. the apocalypse. I hope the audience can find a piece of themselves in this story, too.
