In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican-American culture. Historically, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s difficult victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla, which had they not stopped, the French would’ve gone to the aid of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. While Cinco de Mayo is a celebration held on May 5, not all events listed are held on that date.
With COVID-19 being an issue, there are no public in-person events scheduled for Cinco de Mayo 2020. Some organizations are planning celebration events in the fall or streaming online.
